Quick verdict

Words of Radiance is the second book in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, and it is widely regarded by fans as one of the strongest entries in the series. Reviewers commonly say it moves faster than the first book, deepens its main characters and builds toward a large, high-energy finale. It is also very long, at more than a thousand pages in many editions, and you need to have read The Way of Kings first.

What the book is

The Stormlight Archive is an epic fantasy set on the world of Roshar, where violent storms shape both the landscape and the magic. The first book introduced the main cast and the world in detail. Words of Radiance (published in 2014) continues the stories of its central characters: Kaladin, a soldier who leads a group of former bridgemen; Shallan, a young scholar-artist with a complicated past; and Dalinar, a war leader troubled by visions. Adolin, Dalinar’s son, and Jasnah, a scholar and princess, also have significant roles.

What works

  • Pacing. Many reviewers say the book gives readers the payoffs that the slower setup of the first novel was building toward.
  • Character growth. Kaladin and Dalinar face difficult moral choices, and Shallan takes on a larger role with a story told partly through flashbacks.
  • Action. The fights and the large-scale finale are often cited as highlights.
  • Ensemble cast. Readers frequently say they enjoy several characters, not just the main few, which keeps the many storylines engaging.
  • Rewards attention. The book connects to broader ideas in Sanderson’s shared universe, so there are small details that reward rereading.

What may not work

  • Length. At over a thousand pages, it takes a real commitment.
  • Reading prerequisite. It builds directly on the first book, so it is not a good place to start.
  • Heavy lore. There are many names, terms and factions, which can feel dense.
  • Subjective preferences. Some readers prefer other entries in the series, and not everyone agrees on which storylines are strongest.

What are the Words of Radiance?

In the story, the “Words” are oaths. Characters connected to an ancient order known as the Knights Radiant speak vows as they progress in their powers, and the book’s title refers to these spoken oaths and to the knowledge surrounding them. Exactly what the Words are, and who speaks them, is part of the pleasure of the book, so we keep the details vague here.

Why don’t men read in Stormlight?

In the culture of Alethkar, reading and writing are considered women’s skills, while men are expected to be warriors. This is a social convention in the story, not a rule of the whole world, and it shapes how several characters behave. It appears early in the series and is part of how Sanderson builds the culture’s gender roles.

Reading order and what comes after

Read The Way of Kings first. After Words of Radiance comes Oathbringer, followed by Rhythm of War. A fifth main book, Wind and Truth, was released in late 2024. If you are new to Sanderson’s wider universe, you do not need to read other series first, although other books connect to it.

Are Words of Radiance any good?

For readers who enjoy long, plot-rich epic fantasy, yes. The consensus among reviewers is that it is a major step forward from the first book in pacing and emotional payoff. If long series are not your preference, or you want something shorter and episodic, you may enjoy the more compact style of The Last Wish instead.
